About this course
A single-day course exploring the latest developments in personal and small company taxation, focusing on what practitioners need to know now and how recent changes are affecting taxpayers and businesses in practice.
Delivered by Barry Jefferd, ATT President and Tax Partner at George Hay Chartered Accountants, alongside the ATT Technical Team, we'll explore key updates across personal tax, including changes to savings, property and dividend taxation, Making Tax Digital, and new income tax compliance requirements.
We'll also examine the growing HMRC focus on small companies, covering areas such as directors' loan accounts, new reporting obligations and forthcoming changes to corporation tax processes.

Meet the Speaker(s)
Barry Jefferd
Tax PartnerBarry Jefferd
Tax PartnerBarry trained with a City of London practice where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser and became a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Subsequently he joined George Hay and became responsible for establishing the Tax Department, which he still heads. He became a Partner in the firm in 1990 and was instrumental in establishing the firm’s Huntingdon office in 1994. In April 2020, Barry became Senior Partner.
Barry advises on the complete range of taxes, although he particularly enjoys Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax and property and land transactions. Another of Barry’s strengths is providing reports as an expert to Court. These reports are often required on marital breakdown or to resolve shareholder disputes. He has appeared in both the County Court and the High Court as an expert witness on share-valuation matters.
Barry became one of the first accountants in the country to pass the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ probate qualification, which means that George Hay via GH Probate Ltd is now licensed to carry out probate services.
He lectures widely on taxation on behalf of Taxation Institutes, providing training for other taxation professionals. He starts every presentation with a slide saying “Tax is Fun” reflecting his enthusiasm for the planning opportunities available. He is also co-author of two books; Tax Planning, a joint publication between the UK200 Group and the Daily Telegraph, and the Innovation Handbook, which is endorsed by the Intellectual Property Office.

Helen Thornley
Technical Officer at ATTHelen Thornley
Technical Officer at ATTHelen is a technical officer with the ATT, where her role includes looking at the latest changes in tax policy, and working with HMRC on developments and improvements to their systems and processes.
Helen’s background is in personal tax, and prior to joining the ATT she worked in the north of England advising family businesses and high net worth individuals. Helen writes for publications including Tax Adviser, AccountingWEB, and Taxation magazine. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Money Box Live and BBC Radio 5 Live's Wake up to Money in addition to many local radio stations and been quoted in the Financial Times, Telegraph and Guardian. Helen is also a member of the CIOT, ICAEW and STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners).

Emma Rawson
Director of Public Policy at ATTEmma Rawson
Director of Public Policy at ATTEmma is Director of Public Policy at the ATT, leading their tax technical and professional standards work. Her focus is on emerging tax policy, and she works closely with HMRC and the Treasury. She also strongly believes in sharing her knowledge about and love of tax with others. Whether that’s members of the accounting and tax profession through articles and talks, or the general public through media work and school visits.
Emma has a main focus on business and employment taxes, and frequently contributes articles on topical tax issues to leading tax and accountancy publications. She has presented talks and webinars around the country, as well as appearing on BBC Radio 5Live and BBC News to discuss tax issues and providing oral evidence to committees of both the House of Lords and House of Commons.
Emma is a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).
In 2026 she was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of her contributions to the tax profession. She also received the ‘Outstanding Contribution by an Individual’ award at the 2026 Tolley’s Taxation Awards.

David Wright
Technical Officer at ATTDavid Wright
Technical Officer at ATTDavid has a particular focus on personal taxes, including capital taxes and trusts. He trained as a Chartered Accountant whilst working in the private client team at a Big 4 firm. After a short spell in industry, he moved back into practice where he specialised in personal tax at regional and mid-tier firms before joining the ATT as a technical officer in 2023.
At the ATT, David works on a range of personal tax issues and policy developments, including Self-Assessment, Making Tax Digital, and non-residence issues. David writes technical content for a number of industry publications, as well as contributing to publicising tax issues in the mainstream media. David is a member of the ATT, CIOT and ICAEW.
