Basis period reform – things agents need to know

This session will have a practical focus and will cover the top things agents need to know to help their clients through the change in the income tax basis period rules, including:

  • the new normal under the tax year basis
  • the transition year 2023/24 - how profits and tax will be calculated
  • overlap relief and spreading of excess profits
  • use of provisional figures and how to correct them
  • practical and financial pain points for clients and what can be done to alleviate these.

Meet the speakers

Makayla Combes ACCA CTA

Makayla heads up the Tax and Business Consultancy team at Ad Valorem Group, providing expert advice in a number of areas, including. Property tax reliefs, Mergers and acquisitions, HMRC enquiries, Employee incentivisation, business growth, and obtaining investment.

Outside of this role, Makayla also sits on the New Tax Professionals committee at CIOT and ATT.

Emma Rawson FCA CTA ATT

Emma's main focus is business taxes and VAT. She originally trained in corporation tax with Deloitte, working in both their London and Leeds offices, and also spent a short time working in a specialist consultancy firm providing advice to other practitioners before joining the ATT as a technical officer in 2017. She is a member of the ATT and CIOT, and a Fellow of the ICAEW. 

Helen Thornley FCA CTA ATT

Helen has a focus on personal and capital taxes. Initially qualifying as a Chartered Accountant before moving to tax, she worked in practice as a private client consultant in a mid-tier firm until her appointment as a technical officer in 2017. Helen also has an interest in the history of tax.

David Wright ACA CTA

David has a particular focus on personal taxes, including capital taxes and trusts. He trained as a Chartered Accountant whilst working in the private client team at a Big 4 firm. After a short spell in industry, he moved back into practice where he specialised in personal tax at regional and mid-tier firms before joining the ATT as a technical officer in 2023.
